2013-2014

Still catching up with everything that has been going on with us. I really need to get better at keeping up to date with this blog and writing as things happen haha. One day I will, that day is not today.

Rebekah- She is a crawling pro now. I love watching her go for things and the gets there quickly and lunges for it. She is a girl who knows what she wants. She fights naps and going to sleep but as soon as she is out she is out for hours. She enjoys sleep, she just has to be reminded that she does. She doesn't cry very often which I am forever grateful for. When she does however it is very loud and distressful. She loves her Noah. She crawls after him and tries to pull herself up on time all the time. He isn't a fan haha. He will learn to love it. Rebekah knows her name now. She will turn and look when she hears Rebekah and Bekah. She loves her daddy. When Sean is in the room she is staring at him and trying to get him to speak to her. She loves his voice. She loves being tickled. Her feet are so ticklish. She has the funniest throat giggle gargle ever! I just love baby laughs. She snuggles mommy all day long. She is so good at pulling herself up into sitting position and will stay there for as long as she likes. I bet its fun seeing the world from a new point of view. She is eating baby food and real food now. Her favorites are guacamole (doesn't like just plain avocado),  mashed potato, yogurt, bitter tasting veggies, rice cereal mixed with any fruit baby food. She likes to be read to and will just sit in my lap and look at the pictures as I read.

My baby carrier I got for Christmas from Sean. I am in love with it!

Noah- Our little sweetheart. He is such a sensitive caring boy. He loves to cuddle, pick out his own clothes, help with whatever we are doing. He likes to help do the dishes, sweep the floor, make smoothies, change the laundry in the washer and dryer. His favorite activity is to play his guitar with daddy. They both boom it and sing songs. Noah is getting really good with his songs. He knows the words to a bunch of songs and loves to sing them. He has a smirk that will get him anything in life. Seriously women years down the line will fawn over him I know it. He just has such a sweet smile and he knows he is a cutie. He talks about people out of the blue at home. We will be playing with puzzles or another toy and he will just start talking about someone and something they said once. Examples: Carlos trying to pick him up or Emily driving a school bus (emily has never driven a school bus so no clue where this came from), or Robyn talking to him on the computer, or Amanda giving him something to eat, Grandma taking me for walks. Noah loves to pray. He holds his little hands and bows his head and just says whatever comes to his mind at the time. Little kids prayers are the sweetest. I like when they haven't gotten into the habitual sayings that we all get into sometimes. He prays for mommy to love me, and daddy to come home and play and bless the food, and Bekah to not push me. Its so funny and sweet. I like that he knows he is talking to Heavenly Father. At night when he wakes up and can't get back to sleep a prayer is sometimes the only thing that will calm him.  He is progressing with potty training. I still don't think he is fully ready yet. On Monday he was in 'britches' as he calls them, instead of a diaper for half the day. He went potty on the toilet 3 times but also on the floor 4 times. He is so close but I think he just doesn't know how to hold it yet which is important. He told me 3 times before we went potty that he needed to go and we rushed to the potty and he made it. The other times he didn't is because he told me right during or after he went. He only went a little bit each time and then when we got off the potty and into the living room and were there for a few seconds he wet his britches. Maybe it is just a matter of staying on the potty longer. I'm not sure. We will just keep going off his ques and not push anything to much right now. He loves play dates! Playing with Spencer, or Belle and Gracie is so fun! And he talks about it for days afterward. His best friend is Calli. Its fun that she is over 2 days a week and he looks forward to those days. They love playing together and reading stories. Their conversations crack me up!

Example : Conversation between Noah and Calli.
Calli found the found the book she gave him for Christmas.

C- I found your present Noah! I bought this for you
N- Yes you did. You did that for me.
C- Ya I bought this for your present at the store. I picked it out to give you.
N- Ya I like it. It's mine. Can I have it?

She hands the book to him

N- this is mine because you gave it to me for my Christmas. I opened the wrapping paper for it. ...So its mine. Thanks!
C- you're welcome. Can I read it now?

Deana-  I am doing good on most days. I am so grateful to be a mother and wife and I love those roles. I love the sweet and silly things the kids do. I love taking care of them and Sean and making sure the house is always clean and orderly, and making sure we have good meals to eat. I love planning fun things to do. Building forts out of blankets and chairs and the couch, reading stories, tickling my littles, going outside to the swing set. I am busy all day taking care of them and playing and planning and budgeting and making sure every thing is going to plan. I sometimes get lost in all that I am doing and feel like I am going to fall. Its a weird feeling. I'm not sure what I am going to fall from but I just get a falling feeling. I am still struggling with depression and anxiety. I have good days and very good moments throughout the week. I can't stress how much I love my family. They really do make me so so happy. There is just another side of me that wants to break down and go to sleep and not have to wake up. Not in a creepy I want to kill myself sort of way. Just I don't want to exist. I know that sounds paradox but its just how my head is working these days. I want to just be happy and enjoy my sweet little ones. I know I am so blessed to have the things I have. I wish I could just stop. Stop feeling the way I feel sometimes, stop hating myself and my thoughts. I guess mostly I don't feel worthy of having the things I have. I feel like my kids and husband are too much for me. That my friends are too good. That one day they will wake up and realize that I'm not what they thought I was. I feel like my sisters and parents are disappointed in me. I didn't mean this to be what it is ending up being. I was going to just write about how happy I was and how sweet my little family. But then my fingers just started writing my thoughts instead of what I had planned to write. Its kind of therapeutic. As I write this I want to delete this whole thing and start over though. I'm not sure if I will or not. I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me or thinking I'm a nut case. I just want to be real. The reason I started writing this blog was for my kids. The one I was growing and the ones I knew I was going to have. I want them to know what life was like for them growing up. What life was like for me while they were growing. The good the bad the average. I don't want to skip over things just because it wouldn't fit nicely into a Disney movie.  I hope none of them every go through what I am right now but if they do or know someone who is I want them to know my raw feelings while I was. Maybe it will help them. Maybe this will help me? I don't know.  Other than the looming depression stuff I am good. I started a work out program last night. Its called Bikini Body Mommy Challenge. The woman who founded it did it twice to lose her baby weight and now is doing it again to lose baby weight. Its nice having a women who looks like me doing the work out instead of a super fit women who makes me feel like an idiot trying to work out.  She is sweaty and winded by the end of the work out too so I feel like I'm on the same level and will get better with time. She lost 100 pounds the last time she did her program so I am hoping to lose 10 or maybe 15 pounds. I was 20 pounds lighter before I had Noah but only 10 lighter before I got pregnant with Rebekah so I would be happy with something in between. I don't think my body will ever be what it was before I had Noah. I'm excited to get fit and to have more endurance and energy during the day. It will also be really nice to look in the mirror and not grimace. I went to Downeast basics and spent the giftcard I got for Christmas. It was really fun. Melissa Burnham and I split our Christmas giftcards with each other so we got lots of things from different places. I am so happy with my new clothes. Melissa has really gotten me into wearing leggings with a big shirt most days. Its so comfortable but can be dressed up really easily. I have been looking at pinterest boards for easy sewing projects and it makes me really want a sewing machine. Someday **sigh** Sean and I mostly watch tv shows at night after the kids go to sleep. Its nice having the down time to just relax but I would like to start playing some games at night to keep things interesting. He is a cutie though. I am happy doing anything with him.  I'm so blessed to have him as mine. He takes care of our family and especially me.

2nd day of work out. I'm sore.

Sean- Sean is really enjoying his time off of school. He has signed up for two online classes that he needs to do before he applies for the Ultrasound program in March. Online will be a great break from his normal full time schedule at ASU. And the bonus is that Rio Salado will let him work at his own pace so he can get through the classes quickly enough for the apply deadline. He has been teaching himself the guitar with the help from a few apps on his Ipad. He has gotten quite good. He knows a lot of chords and the beginning to Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. He has fun playing his guitar with Noah and Rebekah loves the sound of them both playing. He is going to start getting back to the gym most nights which will help with his energy levels as well. I love watching him interact with the kids. They just adore their daddy and he gets such delight out of making them laugh. He has been picking up a lot of my slack around the house and taking care of the kids when he is home. I just love him.

My Dear Rebekah

I have been slaking and haven't written  you your love letter from mommy. I'm sorry sweetheart. But here it is now. You will learn that even if I don't do it right away I will always do what I say I will. I love you so much Rebekah! Your daddy and Noah just adore you as well. Daddy loves to make you dance to his music and singing songs to you. Also Noah loves watching you "dance" and dancing next to you. He is going to love being a big brother to you as you get older I can tell. He is always asking to kiss you and hug you. He may occasionally kick at you or grab your hand a little too tight but just know its out of excitement and there is no malice in it at all. I hope you two grow up to be very close and can talk to one another and help uplift each other. A friend is someone that helps bring you closer to Christ. It is my hope that you will be that friend to one another.

You are such a delicate little thing. Daddy and I love that about you. We have seen other baby girls and while all of them are beautiful and girly you are the most girly one I have ever seen.Your demeanor seems to be soft and quite. I love your little squeaks you make. Even your cry is so girly and calm. You have loving eyes. I can tell you have so much going on in your angelic baby mind. I can't wait to here all the things you want to say. This week you began to smile when daddy and I talk to you. You also have started to "talk". Its so sweet hearing your coos and ooo's. You make the most adorable "0" face with your mouth. It makes me smile. I know that you are going to do great things Miss Rebekah. I just want you to always remember that Daddy and I love you very much and will always be here for you. I hope you can see us as friends some day. I know that someday you will be a teenager and we might not always see eye to eye. That doesn't mean that I am going to try to be your "friend" and let you do what ever you want. But that does mean that everything I do is for your benefit. I remember days that I didn't think of my mom as a friend by any means. I as some girls do fought with my mom when I was younger. I do hope we can skip that haha. But just in case I can just remind myself that I did the same with my mom occasionally and now we are the closest of friends. You happen to have an amazing grandmother and I hope to be the mother to you that she is to me. You are just a darling girl. I have some hopes and dreams for you. I hope you are able to stay close to the Savior in all that you do. I hope that you will know of your self worth and not let the world put you down or make you feel inferior. You are a daughter of God and have potential to be a Queen. I hope you smile often and bring light into the sometimes dark world. You can use that light to make your path bright and find your way through anything. I hope that you have a passion for something. Anything. Chose something that you love and use it to make the yourself and others around you find joy. I hope you find a young man lucky enough to have your love and be married in the Temple. I know that if you do these things you will have true happiness and peace in this life. I love you so much baby girl.

Later in life you might hear (probably from Aunt Amanda cuz she likes to mess with me haha) that I always said I wanted all boys for children. Well that is true. I did always say that. Growing up with sisters was hard sometimes with the silly girl fights and drama that sometime comes with having a house with the majority of girls. Also I taught it would be easier to not have to deal with bows, outfits, and fashion. All of that just seems so very silly to me now. Especially when I look back and think of how grateful I am to have my sisters and my brothers as well. I am so happy that I have my little boy and girl. I love putting little bows on your head, and dressing you in adorable outfits. Also I so look forward to helping you in young womens and talking to you about dating someday. There are so many things that only being a mother to a girl can offer.

I love you so so much sweet one. Its been said and might be cliche but I am a sucker for such things, that "how can you split love between children? You don't you multiply it". That is so very true. I have so much love for both my lovely children and I know that I will for each one that The Lord blesses me with. Thank you for choosing to come to our family. I am grateful to be your mommy. I can't wait to teach you things and help you learn.

Love you with all my heart and then some,
Mommy

Big things tonight

Rebekah turned over to her side! Just happened moments ago. Such a strong girl. :)

In other news about miss Bekah. She is so sweet and cuddly. She loves to be held close and on our chest. She rarely cries and even when she does it's so girly and cute. It kind of sounds like a baby triceratops. She mostly sleeps during the day but when she is awake she stares and smiles. Sean loves her dark eyes. She has such loving eyes.

The big news for Noah is that he went to sleep tonight with no binky! He has grown quite attached to it so it was a tough endeavor. Yesterday morning he asked for it and Sean said no and Noah says in such a dramatic voice "I neeeed it!" Haha we laughed and said silly no you don't. He got distracted and forgot about it.

Tonight wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Mostly because  I wasn't home for the worst part. I have a hard time not caving when Noah cries. Sean is stronger than I am. We were in need of groceries so Sean let me go shopping while he dealt with bug. We gave him kisses and Sean read him a story. I went shopping and Sean stayed home with the kids. Rebekah slept the whole time and woke up a little after I got home to eat. Sean texted me while I was in the check out line saying that Noah had been crying for the last 40 minutes and that maybe he should give him he bink. I said I'm not there so it's up to him but I think if we give it to him he will think he can just cry and get it every time. I got home and Noah wasn't asleep but he also wasn't crying. He was kind of whining a little but mostly just talking. Sean told me that after he texted me he went in there and calmly talked to him. He told Noah he was too big for  binky and that he won't get them anymore. He said "you're a big boy now so you don't need them to sleep". Noah understood because he stopped crying and said "no binky" Sean let him know that mommy would come in and give him loves when she got home. I went in there and have him kisses and a hug. He said to me "binky? Ya no binky. All gone " and I said ya you're a big boy so they are all gone now but you are ok. Here put your baby roo (a stuffed kangaroo) to sleep. Help him go to sleep. It was adorable.  He put his roo on a blanket and cuddled up to it. A few minutes later he was asleep.

I think we did a good job working together to get him passed the binky stage. I know it will take a couple more nights of him crying but I'm excited to have him done with it. Hopefully with him having it explained to him he will do better tomorrow and not cry or at least cry less.

I'm so proud of my sweet children. They are so beautiful. :)

Noah Games

Noah is a sponge. He soaks up knowledge from every where around him. Sean and I are amazed everyday at the new things he shows us. He is such a polite child. He loves to say "Dank-you" aka thank you. He says it in a sing song voice too which makes it even cuter. He has learned to sit still and reverent during prayer. Being a toddler he doesn't always do it but its becoming more frequent. He holds his hands together and waits til the end and proudly says "amen". He also loves to say Jesus and point him out in pictures. He has been stringing his wide vocabulary into two to three word sentences. Like "more food please" "where's dad?" "That hurts"

Noah has learned a lot of his body parts. So far he can say and point out on himself and others : toes, knees, nose, mouth, eyes, head, butt or bum, belly button, arms, hand, fingers and ears. It's his favorite activity in the morning to point at mommy and daddy's face. He often calls toes "piggies". He loves playing this little piggy went to the market with daddy. So he began calling them piggies. He also will put his foot on mommies and says "piggies" then mommy puts her foot on his and he pulls his foot up and on top again proclaiming "piggies!"

He is doing pretty well with potty training. He likes to tell us during and after he goes. He sometimes lets us know before but it's a work in progress. He enjoys sitting on the potty.

Lotion is a very important thing in his life as well. Haha. He loves asking for lotion and requesting where it should go. Belly knees or arms. He runs it in and promptly asks for more.

He isn't a fan of eating lately. It's a chore to get him to eat most days. But he is usually always happy to eat Cheerios and Fruit Loops. Also Gold Fish.

He is still our little music man. He connects with music. He has been singing along with songs recently. His favorite is a song by B.O.B called magic. He repeats magic over and over in tone with the song. Also he will song along with most songs. He picks one or two words he likes in the song and the repeats it. He still dances enthusiastically to any rhythm he hears. The dishwasher, music, drums. Anything.

He is more and more interested in babies. He points them out and touches their faces. He points at my belly and says baby Bekah or sister. It's pretty adorable.

He loves peak a boo. He hides and yells boo!!

Basically Noah is just a sweetheart kind loving child and we are blessed everyday having him in our lives. We love him.

Sean's Mom taught me how to cut Noah's hair. She did it this time but now I know how to do it for next time he needs a hair cut. This boy's hair grows like crazy fast! He is such a cutie either way though. She was a genius and had some great tricks to keeping him entertained enough to finish the cut. She put him in the sink and ran water for him to play with, made sure he had a sippy cup to drink and play with. Told him to look in the mirror at himself, and let him play with the hair that was cut off. He did such a good job staying mostly still. I just love him. And mama Howell for helping me learn a new mama skill

Mommy work is hard work

Noah has been getting better slowly. He still has fit moments where the pain is just too much so he cries and screams. But most of the day was filled with silly Noah-ness. He is such an angel. Its really hard to see him in such discomfort. I had a really bad moment Saturday night. it was a long long day, Noah was so fussy and in so much pain, I hadn't gotten much sleep at all the night before, and I had started to get sick that day too. Sean was at work all day so it was just me and baby man. We had a pretty good morning just resting and cuddling. Then we went to my parents house so they could watch Noah while I went and did a massage. That was a lot of work for my poor tired preggie body but I did pretty awesome cuz I got a $10 tip :) Then after the massage I met up with my family at their ward picnic. Noah had a blast. He really clung to my Dad most of the time which my Dad loved. Usually he doesn't get much time with him cuz he works really late and Noah goes to bed early. So he doesn't let him hold him that often. He is warming up though so thats great.

After the picnic we went home. We were both so very exhausted. He went to sleep right when we got home. I did some cleaning and read and watched some tv. I should have gone to sleep. About 9pm Noah woke up screaming and crying. I gave him his medicine, cuddled him, sang to him, tried to feed him some food (he threw it), tried to give him a sippy cup (he threw that too). I was so tired so I called my dad to come over and help cuz Sean was at work still for another half hour. He helped me get Noah calmed down and I was able to sit and rest for a while. Sean came home and brought Noah ice cream and me a Big Mac and fries. What a good husband and father. Im so grateful for my dad too. He told me that there are tough times but that there are mostly good times and we need to concentrate on those. I was just so tired watching a screaming child was not something I was up for at that moment.

Today was much much better! Noah and I spent the day with my mom. We took her to lunch at Applebees and then went shopping at walmart. Then my mom and Justin helped me bring the groceries to my apartment. Mom hadn't seen our place yet so she was excited to come see. We hung out for awhile and played with bug. Noah went to bed early and has been sleeping well. Now Sean and I are just watching some tv. Its been a good day.

Findings of a new mom

I realize I have only been doing this Mom stuff for a little over 2 months but I feel as though I have learned so much already in this time! I know there is lots more to learn and I'm excited for future adventures. The great thing about mom's is that they are always willing to give advice of what they have learned. I'm happy to join the group :) SO here it goes, the things I have learned either from other moms and some all by myself.
  • Babies don't really get dirty so they only need a bath 2 or 3 times a week. Sounds crazy but its true! They have sensitive skin and if you bathe them too much it will dry out their skin. This happens with Noah if we give him a bath everyday.
  • You can't spoil a baby. Cuddle Cuddle Cuddle :) They are only this small for such a short time
  • Sleep when your baby sleeps. I know this advice is always given but I think sometimes we new parents take it in one ear and out the other. I know I did! I just didn't feel tired by the time that Noah would finally fall asleep in the beginning. But don't wait til you're really tired you body is already getting ready to crash at that point.
  • Take time for your marriage, Date your spouse!!! Its important for your child for you to have a strong happy marriage.
  • It's ok to admit you need help sometimes. This was hard for me. I felt like I needed to do everything. Keep the house spotless, always be the one to care for Noah, cooking and take care of everything else that goes on in a day. I finally broke down and realized that after I got some help I felt much better.
  • Trade off who stays up with the baby. Sean and I trade off. If I'm up for the first part of the night he gets the next and so on.
  • Skin time is still important! Bond with your baby.
That's all I have for right now. More to come as I learn things  :) I just love my family <3

Oh things that are happening in the life of us: Moving back into an apartment (post about that to come soon) Sean is doing wonderfully in his classes at ASU, Halloween and dressing up!

Infant Brain Development

Ever wonder how the brain develops? This past week I had the opportunity to go to a class on infant brain development. My friend Jessica's Mom teaches the class at the hospital she works for. Sean's mom and sister came with me, which made the class more fun. It was a 4 hour course filled with information! I can't even put all that I learned or else this blog would be entirely too long. Elizabeth won a book in raffle and gave it to me. It's called Bright from the Start by Jill Stamm, PH.D. It has a lot in it that was discussed in the class. I shall now write the things that stood out to me most in the class.

Did you Know?
  • By the end of the third year of life a child's brain is almost 90% of its adult size.
  • Infant and toddler learning involves the formation of brain structures that "grow themselves" through use.
  • As parents and care givers to infants we can influence the way a his/her brain grows
  • The earlier a system in the brain wires up the more resistant it is to change.
  • Attentive care allws the brain to develop in a healthy way
  • Bonding and attachment behaviors develop a sense of security for the infant and are important for healthy brain functioning.
  • Play is how children learn. "babies are just scientist in a crib" they explore the phsical world and test their limits and capabilities.
  • This one is a direct quote so as to get the information just right " New research shows that the sheer number (and variety) of words routinely spoken to a child in his environment has a direct influence on his performance on traditional IQ tests!New research also examines the positive effects on mood from listening to or singing music." The research said that it is best to speak about 30,000 words to your child everyday! That sounds like a lot but its just reading Cat in the Hat 18 times.
  • Music improves some types of memory.
  • Music activates both sides of the brain and aids in reasoning and relieves stress.
Another thing that was talked about was the baby talk vs parentese. Baby talk is using made up words like "goo goo ga ga do da da". Parentese is real words but elongated to keep the baby's attention like "Looook at the baaby" Research has shown that using baby talk causes speech impediments.

So that is the gist of what I learned. Pretty cool huh?

Super Daddy

In case you didn't already know, Sean is pretty much amazing at everything he does. He is the perfect husband and now he is the perfect Daddy. My whole family has told me so many times this past couple days how impressed they are with him. He is just so caring to me and baby Noah. Some things that Mom, Andrea, Brittany and Amanda have said to me about Sean and also things that I have noticed and seen:

I loved seeing him during the labor. He would occasionally scan the room in a protective manner making sure everything was alright.

When the doctor said Noah's temp was too low a couple hours after the birth and you were up going to the bathroom Sean right away took his shirt off and held Noah skin to skin to get him warm.

Every time Noah needs anything he is the first to get up with out being asked

He sits and has real conversations with Noah and just lets him know how much he loves him

Noah was really stressed and wasn't eating and his breathing hadn't gotten normal yet at 5:11pm so Sean gave him a blessing.

Every time Sean leaves the room Noah is in he kisses him goodbye

Sean sits with mommy during breastfeedings so he can bond with us both

He takes care of the diapers so mommy can sleep

He comforted me the first night home when the hormones hit in and I was scared and stressed. He just told me that I was doing great and that he loves me and so does Noah and everything will be just fine.

He just loves Noah so much! And he loves me and I love him and Noah and there is just so much love in this house its amazing :)

How Much Does It Cost to Have a Baby?

As you know it is different for every family how much money ends up being spent on having a child. It all depends on many factors: Insurance coverage, birth plan, if this is the first child in the family or not, how much is given or donated by friends and family, financial situation, government or church help. I'm sure you can think of others as well but those are the ones that come to my mind right now. My friend Jessica was curious as to how much Sean and I spent on getting ready for Noah. I have been keeping a list since finding out we were pregnant of the money spent on each item to do with pregnancy and preparing to have a child. So for all you inquiring minds here is the chart. The items we were given or lent still have a price of what it would have cost us had we bought it. Some of them don't have a price because I don't know how much it actually cost. This chart can be used if you would like to see what you might want to prepare for in the future for having a baby. You can easily add or take off any item on our list to see what you would do for your own family. Or if you already had a baby you can just compare. I welcome comments on how much you spent. It won't be the same for every family. Like I said above, its different for everyone. I'm sure there are ways we could have spent less or more. I'm also very sure that we spent money on things that we didn't have to have but we wanted therefore they were worth the extra cost to us. This is obviously just the start up cost. As you know after birth babies still require things like food, school, clothes and many other things. This is just the tip of the iceberg. -

Total: $3207.60

Actually Spent By Us: $1840.46

We were so surprised when we saw the total! I can't believe we have spent that much money. I didn't even know we had that much money at one point. Heavenly Father has truly blessed us abundantly. A special thank you goes to my older sister Amanda and her husband Corey. They have been so generous to us through this entire pregnancy. My niece is 18 months and no longer needs most of the baby stuff they have and so they have either given or lent us most of the things we have for Noah. It is a great system we have in place. Sean and I will use the stuff until Noah no longer needs it and then give it back to Amanda and Corey when they have their next child and it will just go back and forth from there. Genius right?! Yes I agree. The idea of having a baby might be intimidating when you see those kinds of numbers but it is definitely worth every penny. It doesn't make sense on paper, looking back at past bills and expenses compared to our income we can't figure out where the money came from to buy all the things needed but somehow it worked out. Sean and I are so grateful to all those who have given to help us. We know we couldn't have be as prepared as we are with out our friends and family and most of all our Heavenly Father.
